RESULTS AFTER THE SURGERY

What is the average weight loss with each obesity surgery type?

Weight loss is measured in “% of excess weight ”.

How to measure it?

  1. Calculate your approximate excess weight  (compare yourself with people with the same height).

  2. Calculate the proportion (If your excess is 50 kg, average weight loss is 25-30 kg with AGB, 30-35 with GT, 35-40 with Bypass).

Surgery

% excess weight loss

ADJUSTABLE GASTRIC BANDING 50-60%
SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY 60-70%
GASTRIC BYPASS 70-80%

Interventionist procedure

% excess weight loss

INTRAGASTRIC BALLOON 35-50%

(weight loss’ success depends on the patient’s ability to change his/her dietetic habits even in malabsorption procedures (gastric Bypass). If the patient doesn’t follow the pre and post-procedure advice, he/she could regain the lost weight).

In what timeframe?

  • Adjustable gastric banding: Weight will be lost slowly: over 6 to 18 months (with this treatment the weight loss timeframe will be strongly influenced by the patient’s participation)
  • Sleeve gastrectomy: Most of the weight will be lost in 4 to 6 months. The weight loss will continue slowly and progressively up to 12 months.

  • Gastric bypass: Most of the weight will be lost in 4 to 6 months. The weight loss will continue slowly and progressively up to 12 months

How and when will my health problems improve?

Hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol are cured in 90% of cases with the first 15 to 25 kg. of weight loss. In the other 10%, the control of the disease will improve (reduced medication or doses)

Sleep apnea and snoring are cured in 90-95% of cases with the initial 20-25 kg.lost.

Joint problems and lack of mobility; improves in 100% of cases with every step of the weight loss.

Psychological problems , anxiety and low self-esteem: improve in 100% of cases with every step of the weight loss. Some patients might have a negative opinion on their self-evaluation: “everybody says that I look good, but I don’t see it…”.

Partner relationships and fertility issues: improve in 100% of cases with every step of the weight loss, (when the problems have no other cause)

Will I need plastic surgery after the weight loss? How could I avoid it?

This is unpredictable.

It depends on: age, sex, obesity degree, recommended nutrition during weight loss, appropriate physical exercise during weight loss

It can be avoided with: Progressive and appropriate physical exercise, healthy diet (therapies, cosmetics, lotions…have little or no efficacy. Mesotherapy is the only treatment that has shown positive results).

The body parts with most frequently needed plastic surgery are:
In women: 1st Abdomen / 2nd Thighs / 3rd Breast / 4th Arms.

In men: 1st Abdomen / 2nd Thighs
