OBESITY, A CHRONIC DISEASE
- Morbid obesity is a disease with a significant genetic component, and because of this, it is often a chronic condition: The patient can always recover the lost weight.
- The genetic component makes the patient’s caloric intake exceed the amount needed, slowly introducing the disease.
- When the patient suffers from obesity (BMI from 30-35), his/her body tries to keep or increase that weight. Moreover, somehow the organism tries to recover the lost weight once it has been produced.
- The only way to keep off the lost weight long term is a radical change on the dietetic habits and lifestyle.
- In the case of morbid obesity (BMI above 40), only obesity surgery can make the patient lose weight and keep it off.
